Rooms that never get comfortable, dust that keeps coming back, and energy bills that climb every summer can all trace back to the same place: the ducts. In most San Fernando Valley homes, those ducts run through a hot attic or a crawl space, where small leaks waste a lot of the air you paid to heat or cool.

Signs your ducts need attention
- Some rooms are much hotter or colder than others, even with the vents open
- Weak airflow from certain vents while others blow hard
- Dust that returns quickly after cleaning, or a dusty smell when the system starts
- High summer bills even though the AC runs fine
- Crushed, torn or sagging ducts you can see in the attic or crawl space
- Whistling or rattling from vents or the ductwork
Repair or replace?
Repair often makes sense when the ducts are in decent shape but have a few problems: a disconnected run, a torn section, or joints that need sealing. A technician can reconnect, patch and seal them with mastic or approved tape.
Replacement is often the better choice when ducts are 25 to 30 years old or more, flattened or brittle, badly sized for the system, or poorly insulated. Many Valley homes from the 1950s through the 1980s still have their original ducts. Replacing them along with a new AC or furnace lets the contractor size everything to work together.
What a good duct job includes
- An inspection of the attic or crawl space, and a check of airflow at the registers
- A plan for the right duct sizes, so every room gets enough air
- Sealed joints and properly insulated ducts, since attics here can get very hot in summer
- A permit when required. In California, many duct and HVAC replacement jobs also need a duct leakage test by a third-party HERS rater. Ask your contractor whether yours does.
A safety note: ducts and fittings in some older homes were wrapped in materials that can contain asbestos. If you see old gray or white wrap that’s crumbling, don’t disturb it. Ask a licensed professional about testing before any work starts.
Ducts vs. duct cleaning
Cleaning removes dust and debris, but it won’t fix leaks, crushed runs or bad sizing. If rooms are uneven or bills are high, have the ducts inspected for leaks and damage first. See duct cleaning and indoor air quality.
